A horizontal boring mill holds the workpiece is stationary on a vertical table. The position of the workpiece is usually adjustable. A vertically adjustable head holds a spindle with the cutting tool. The cutting tool is fed horizontally into the work.

In a vertical boring mill, the workpiece is placed on a horizontal table. Rather than remain stationary, the circular table is rotated and the cutting tool is fed into the workpiece.
