Grinders are used for finishing surfaces. They can also be used to reduce the tolerance on flat and cylindrical surfaces by removing a thin layer of material.

When grinding, the abrasive material is rubbed agains the metal part and small pieces of material are removed from the metal part. The abrasive material is usually on the sruface of a wheel or belt. Grinding generates heat so a good grinder should be designed to control heat in the cutting area.
