Straight side presses have frames with a crown member, two upright side members and a bed member that supports the bolster. These components are often secured in a preloaded position by four tie rods. They are bolted together or welded into one piece.

Because of their construction, they are stiffer than gap frame presses. They are good for either progressive die or transfer die applications. They are produced in many sizes and speeds. Tonnage capacities range from 0 to 5000 tons with speeds sometimes over 1000 strokes per minute.

Mechanical presses are good for blanking at high speeds. They are also good for blanking parts automatically fed with a short feed length.
