WELDER INFORMATION

ALL WELDER EQUIPMENT

There are three common types of welding used during metal fabrication:

    • Oxyfuel gas welding (OFW)
    • Gas metal arc welding or MIG (metal inert gas)
    • Gas tungsten arc welding or TIG (tungsten inert gas)
OFW welding is the oldest method and makes use of heat generated by an acetylene or other gas flame to weld components together. Filler metal is supplied by a welding rod. This method is declinging in popularity because of damage to the workpiece and the newer methods are faster and more economical.

In MIG welding an arc is created between a consumable wire filler metal electrode and the sheet metal workpiece. The inert gas shields and protects the molten metal from the oxygen.

In TIG welding an arc is created between a nonconsumable tungsten electrode and the sheet metal workpiece. Again, the inert gas shields and protects the molten metal from the oxygen. Filler metal may be optionally used.
